Well, I traveled safely to and from the cookie and craft show ... The good news, I had fun and spent quality time with my daughter! We baked pies and cookies and ate several of the broken ones! Bad news ... reality bites... I sold very little so it was a lot of work and stress for "nothing". I should have known better - I don't do well at craft fairs - may return next year but will do demonstrations or something ...
But, they don't call me Pollyanna for nothing ... upon my return, I unloaded all the Christmas and Holiday stuff from my van and set it up in the brick and mortar. Looks very nice and I still have more to create.
At the craft show - things sold in other booths, like 50 cents wooden ornaments and 5 for $10 necklaces. My stuff is one of a kind and higher priced so lots of looks and uhs and ahhhs but very little cash flowing.
Another plus, I took some photos during the time away that may turn in to a painting or two. I made a few new friends at the show that I hope to keep in touch with. And ... time with my daughter ... priceless!
My glass is still half full...

Priceless moments are what really count, but it can be frustrating knowing the value of custom made work... It's a struggle for many of us... but we paint on... and smile!!!!
ReplyDeleteTeri, why do you think I don't venture out of the studio (besides being a complete HERMIT and content with it) unless it is a gallery show or in association with a gallery, where someone else has gone through a portion of the work and I can just smei-focus on art? That may sound lazy, but I have found it effective.
ReplyDeleteThere is much to be said for hermit-tude, and you have so many come to your shop for lessons, you're selling on Etsy, and as the Grinch said, "I have everything in the world I need RIGHT HERE!!!" ;)
You're good.
They didn't know it.
Their loss.....
XXOO!!

Aaaaahhhh . . . to be in the company of other painters! What a relief!
ReplyDeleteTeri- I totally get it. I get your recent experience and the suffering that accompanies competing with crafts. I started Green Post last spring because I have so much trouble selling my artwork and I need to support myself with my art. Thanks for sharing this post because as an abstract painter I tell myself that it is because of what I paint and that realistic/figurative painters somehow have it easier. You make me understand that regardless of subject matter we are ALL in the same boat.
Keep painting and filling that cup :)
